By contrast, population neural states in both monkeys had a robust linear relationship with distance before joystick offset
Results, Ramping, paragraph 1; Figure 3d
What the paper reports
- monkey A, onset against offset R2: two-sided Wilcoxon rank-sum test, Z = -7.81, p < 10⁻⁴ (n = 50 bootstraps)
- monkey M, onset against offset R2: two-sided Wilcoxon rank-sum test, Z = -4.17, p < 10⁻⁴ (n = 50 bootstraps)
With each unit centred by its mean across the two windows, as the Methods state, offset R2 exceeds onset R2 in monkey A (p = 2.8e-07, denoised 5.2e-14) and monkey M reverses (onset 0.787 against offset 0.684, Z = 6.85, p = 7.3e-12; denoised 6.6e-11), so the criterion holds in one monkey. Without distance 1, the Methods' control and outside the criterion, A no longer differs (p = 0.91) and M gives offset above onset (p = 4.9e-12). With the variant centring per window and time bin, offset R2 exceeds onset R2 in both monkeys (A medians 0.853 against 0.502, Z = -6.03, p = 1.6e-09; M 0.935 against 0.808, Z = -6.90, p = 5.2e-12), with denoising (p = 4.2e-08 and 4.0e-14) and without distance 1 (p = 2.4e-11 and 4.2e-14). The mean rate in the offset window is 1.36 spikes/s above the onset window in M and 0.81 below it in A.
How the test differed from the paper’s method
- The main reading centres each unit by its mean across the two windows and regresses without an intercept, as the Methods state (Targeted dimensionality reduction). The method they cite for the regression (ref. 63, Mante et al. 2013) has a constant term at each time point, equivalent to centring per window and time bin, which is run as a variant; the readings give different outcomes, and the question is for the paper's authors (findings).
- The criterion's variant with the code's windows (-200 to -100 ms and -400 to -300 ms on time-warped bins) is not run; only the Methods' windows are.
- The bin of largest coefficient norm is found separately in each window; the Methods do not say whether per window or across both.
- The regression uses 20 ms bins, which the Methods do not give (a standard choice).
- 3 of 9 monkey M sessions are not used (fewer than 10 trials per distance in a direction).
